Jimi Hendrix, the name alone
conjures up fiery images of guitar showmanship that continues to impress
listeners the world over. When he broke onto the scene in early 1967,
he literally rewrote the book on how to play the electric guitar. At the
same time, a young guitarist in Yugoslavia named Pavle Kavec was following
a similar path and his love affair with this genre of music would become
a lifelong passion.
In that same year, Pavle
formed the first "power trio" to emerge on the flourishing Yugoslavian
rock scene. After various line-up changes the band was renamed Oko (The
Eye) in 1972, mesmerizing listeners around the country with their mix
of Hendrix, originals and rock classics.
Throughout the decade they would play countless gigs culminating in the
recording of their first and only album. Released in 1976, "Raskorak",
was a huge success featuring the single "Vse Sem Dal Ti" (I Gave
You Everything); a rock standard to this day.
Recently there has been renewed interest in the band. In 1994 Pavle returned
to the studio, releasing a new CD, but the turning point came in 1998
when bootlegged vinyl copies of "Raskorak" began to appear in
London (and eventually word wide) for 20 pounds. An official CD version
was quickly released in Slovenia and soon the band was playing to a whole
new generation of listeners.
Touring under the moniker: "Oko - A Tribute To Jimi Hendrix"
for three years now, the band has built a following of impressed throughout
the country. One listen to the likes of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lenny
Kravitz and Prince, and the influence and appeal of Hendrix is quite obvious.
Accompanied by Slovene drummer Marko Bertoncelj and Brandos' bassist Ernie
Mendillo of New York City, the band effectively captures the feeling and
energy of The Jimi Hendrix Experience. If you were fortunate enough to
catch Hendrix in his heyday, this will be apparent immediately. For most
however, an Oko concert is a rare opportunity to hear a piece of authentic
rock history.
